Abstract: The formation of households was an important strategy for social relations for slaves the Cariri region. The captives formed various types of familial rela- tionships which transcended conventional ideas of marriage and family units. In this heterogeneous context, the concept of family that arose involved kinship ties that joined enslaved, free and freed people who lived and worked together, irrespective of their differing legal status. The family arrangements observed are in contrast with those described in studies of regions where agricultural exports were not an important economic sector. The presence of family mem- bers with different legal status led to racial mixing, with a variety of skin tones observed among both enslaved and free populations, with the result that, from the latter half of the nineteenth century, the slave family can be characterized larged as miscegenated.
